Sophie has biopsy

Sandoz

Sandoz sent us a brief to support national child renal biopsy wards needing to update their old booklet used to prepare a child (up to the age of 18) for a biopsy, to a more engaging, visual, universal information provider by use of animation.

calming nerves

Although we had a reference for guidance, a key success to this project was the in-depth research we were able to do on location at Nottingham hospital. The medical staff allowed us into the hospital where we met some of the children and filmed the entire process a child would go through if they were receiving their renal biopsy. This provided immense insight of key actions varying from where the doctor and support team would stand, to the way the patient would receive the treatment. We then translated our film in the hospital into animation and, with thanks to the research, enabled us to execute it correctly first time.

visual development

Throughout the animation process, each scene had to be medically approved to ensure aspects such as the blood flows were travelling in the right direction.

Our team wanted to include as many soft touches as possible to prepare the young patients going through a scary procedure. The voice overs used were a real family made up of a mother, father and daughter Sophie alongside a child support worker. They were all animated as the friendly-looking main characters.

The entire process led the overall video to be a calming yet visually engaging way provide patients with the key information they need to prepare for their biopsy. We are proud to say this animation is now being used around the world. (The most recent news we heard was that it was being translated into Japanese!) This NHS biopsy animation was an extremely rewarding project for us, and we are humbled that the end product is helping people who need it most.
